Among the threats to political systems with the potential to challenge a country’s national security in the medium and long term are social-cultural threats. Neglecting such threats can have profound, unexpected, and destructive impacts on social and even national security. This is particularly significant given that adversaries of the Islamic Republic, led by the United States, have increasingly shifted toward soft social-cultural threats following their failures in hard warfare. The importance of this issue has prompted the researchers to identify these threats based on the statements and guidance of His Eminence Ayatollah Khamenei. The study seeks to answer the question: What are the social-cultural threats posed by the United States against the Islamic Republic of Iran, as derived from the Supreme Leader’s statements?
To address this question, a descriptive-analytical method and content analysis technique were employed. The research population consisted of all statements by the Supreme Leader from 1368 (1989) to the present, with data categorized using the analytical units of “sentence” and “paragraph” to identify the Leader’s orientations, emphases, and analyses regarding U.S. social-cultural threats against Iran. The research validity was confirmed by expert scholars, and its reliability was established using Holsti’s formula (0.956).
The findings identify the components of U.S. social-cultural threats as follows: influencing beliefs and values, soft warfare, and undermining social cohesion. The indicators of these components include Islamophobia, fostering religious and sectarian discord, countering beliefs and values, promoting behaviors and products contrary to beliefs, intellectual subversion, cultural invasion, cultural infiltration, propaganda, influence operations, divisiveness, ethnic and racial extremism, and related actions.
