This study, titled “The Anatomy of Betrayal”, analyzes the evolution of recruitment patterns in espionage activities—a fundamental shift from “targeted hunting” and organization-centered recruitment in the classical era to “voluntary cooperation” and self-revelation in the digital age. Data from the U.S. Department of Defense Personnel Security Center indicate that since 1990, over 60% of American spies entered cooperation voluntarily. Comparing this data with findings from Western intelligence agencies and examining the case of “Mohammad Hadi Saleh” in Lebanon shows that psychological pressures, personal failures, economic dissatisfaction, cyber opportunities, and ideological cover simultaneously play decisive roles in modern betrayal.
The analysis identifies four main vulnerability catalysts:
Individual-Psychological: humiliation and damage to self-esteem.
Economic-Motivational: financial pressure and perceived injustice.
Cyber-Digital: digital targeting and social engineering via social networks.
Structural-Organizational: weaknesses in counterintelligence training, smart monitoring, and internal support.
Charney’s psychological model (2014) shows that betrayal typically begins with an “unbearable failure,” initiating a ten-step espionage path. Cognitive neuroscience findings (de Quervain et al., 2004) confirm that revenge-driven actions, through activation of the brain’s reward circuits, reinforce and stabilize hostile cooperation.
The study concludes that countering betrayal and espionage in the digital age requires a combined approach:
Defensive Counterintelligence: smart monitoring, psychological interventions, organizational justice, and digital-focused training.
Offensive Counterintelligence: operational deception, cyber interception, reverse social engineering, and generating distrust in enemy recruitment systems.
Ultimately, betrayal is no longer an exceptional phenomenon but a persistent structural threat. Security is achieved when espionage becomes costly, risky, and unproductive for both the human agent and the recruiting organization.
